记得在中学读天下古代史，就知道远在中国造纸术发明之前三千多年，埃及就普遍运用一种莎草纸，对埃及古老文明的发展做出过共同的奉献。可是，这种纸后来失传。岂料，我此次来开罗，据说这种久已失传的纸张在埃及又再造行世，其中并含有一段感人的中国情缘。原来，再造者就是埃及首任驻华大使哈桑?拉加卜博士。
玄月的开罗，秋高气爽，阳光璀璨。我同多少位同伙来到位于尼罗河边的莎草纸研讨所参观。公关蜜斯殷勤地将我们引领到会客室说：“请稍候，拉加卜博士立时就到。”我晓得，这个研究所是拉加卜博士创立的。但我们来参观之前并未预定，何故将他轰动呢？公关小姐注释说，拉加卜博士有一条不成文的划定：凡中国人前来，部属必需告诉他；只有有空暇，他肯定亲身露面欢迎。正说着，只见一位身段薄弱、庞眉皓发的老翁走出去。不必先容，显然他便是拉加卜博士了。一双热情的手伸过来，几句有点生涩的汉语应酬起来。虽属首次碰面，岁数反差又很大，但同他谈起话来，竟犹如故友，毫无生疏与隔辈之感。

莎草纸在中国造纸术发明之前曾是世界上最先辈的文化传播工具。起先，这种纸为法老宫廷书写圣谕和祷词所专用，其制造方法为王宫把持，严禁外传。然而，无论是王命还是宫墙都禁锢不住文化的传播。这种纸后来逐渐传到民间，成为从下战书、签和约到写婚契、开药方、打借条的日常文化用品。这种既轻巧又易保存的纸张很快从埃及传到两河道域、希腊、罗马，庖代了本地风行的羊皮纸、泥板、蜡板和铅板，一时成为最时尚的书写对象。古埃及毕竟有几文献记录在这种纸上，生怕谁也说不请。古希腊和古罗马的文学作品，囊括亚里士多德的一些著作，已发现有两千五百多部都是用这种纸誊写的。用这种纸抄写的种种古代文字资料，现在统称“莎草纸文献”，是研究古代地中海地区的政治、经济、文化、宗教的主要资料。而这种在古代称作“papyrus”的莎草纸，后来演变成英文中的“paper”一字。纸头轻便，影响重大，由此可见一斑。拉加卜创建的仿古法老村
莎草纸约莫失传于公元10世纪。此中一个重要起因是中国造纸术的西传。听说，其时有一批中国工匠漂泊到中亚的撒马尔罕，把造纸术带到那边。从那里，阿拉伯人把这种造纸术传到近东、北非和欧洲。制作便当、经济耐用的中国纸于是抢占了莎草纸的市场，促使这种古埃及纸的分娩走向式微。
拉加卜博士向我吐露，早在北京任职时，他就作为“业余喜好”摸清了莎草纸兴衰的始末。1964年一脱离外接壤，他即正式开端摸索这种纸的再造问题。他说，他当时面对两浩劫题，一是没有造纸的原料，二是不控制这种纸的制造方法。望文生义，这种纸本来是应用一种属于莎草科的水生植物纸莎草制造的。这种草曾大片发展在尼罗河三角洲地区。后来，因为气象变迁，又没有人工种植，这种草在埃及就逐步绝迹。制造莎草纸而没有纸莎草是不行的。那么，到哪里去寻找这种草呢？拉加卜博士想，既然这种草已往生长在尼罗河三角洲地区，要寻找它就不能离开尼罗河。河下流的三角洲地域找不到，那就到河的中上游地区一试。于是，他不辞辛勤，溯尼罗河而上，直奔苏丹。颠末多次寻找，他终于在苏丹北部的一片池沼地里找到这种高四、五米，茎呈三角状的纸莎草。他发掘出草根，带回开罗，在尼罗河的一条汊道中进行人工莳植。种植成功，有了质料，他又开始寻访造纸的方法。他从城市到墟落跑遍全国，期望像在中国那样，在某个不大引人留意的中央把埋没已久的古代造纸术找到。但他没有成功。他于是仿照在中国屯子看到的那种造纸法子将纸莎草切碎研烂，浸泡在本人家中的澡盆里漂取纸浆。他照样没有成功。
一次次失败没有摇动拉加卜博士的决计，反而磨砺了他的意志。“我一定办出别人办不到的事。”他这样一边自励，一边转向包罗古代文献。古埃及人原先是喜好把所有大事都用莎草纸记载在案的，但拉加卜博士翻遍海内一切文献，却找不到对于莎草纸制造方法的任何笔墨或丹青记录。他找来古罗马驰名作家老普林尼成书于公元77年的三十七卷本《博物志》，里边却是提到莎草纸的制造，惋惜语焉不详。他于是又跑到伦敦的大英博物馆、巴黎的卢浮宫。这样，他用了近三年时候，简直败尽家业，终于网络到一些材料。经过研究、剖析、综合、试验，他总结出一套莎草纸再造的工艺，制造出一种光彩淡黄、纹络清楚、疏密有致、酷似中国旧时粗夏布那样的纸张。把这种纸张同埃及古墓中出土的莎草纸一比，他惊喜地发现，两者几乎千篇一律。他终于成功了，时为1966年。
拉加卜博士这段“法老纸”再造的故事固然并不太迂回，但却颇回味无穷。人们稍加思考就不难发明，汗青总爱给人开顽笑：中国造纸术的发明与流传，促使莎草纸失去市场，末了使其制造术失传。事隔一千多年，中国古老造纸术的保留与启示，又促使久已失传的莎草纸得以再造和新生。这是一个何等奇异而有趣的历史的怪圈。在这个怪圈中，历史让中国的蔡伦在公元二世纪之初在人类发现史上饰演了一个光辉的脚色；一千八百多年之后，历史又让埃及的拉加卜在人类发扬自己的古老文化的历史上据有了辉煌的一席之地。
拉加卜博士对我这番谈论彷佛并不感兴味。他抚摩着渐见希罕的满头银丝，付之一笑。他急于要告诉我的还有：莎草纸再形成功之后，一方面用于修复、誊抄、保存埃及古代文献，另一方面用于发展示代游览事业。他聘任一大批艺术家，将从埃及古墓中挖掘出来的壁画、法老与神祗（氐旁改氏旁）的头像、楔形与象形文字、著名文籍的片段一一描述到这种纸上。拙朴的淡黄色纸张，配以格调别致的图画，显得古色古香，给人以显明而惨重的历史感。这种画一上市，立即就成为列国旅客争购的留念品。如今，拉加卜博士发明的这种法老纸画，年贩卖额已达一亿四千多万美圆。
他这一成功引发了埃及全国各地几百家莎草纸制作作坊和莎草纸画室的鼓起。拉加卜博士告诉我，到今朝为止，从事莎草纸制作的人员已超越三万；从事莎草纸画制作与销售的职员也有三万人。确实，在埃及，我们无论走到哪里，随处都可见到有莎草纸画抛售。不过，拉加卜博士指出，现在市场上发售的莎草纸画，很多是假货。那些又黄又硬的画纸，并非用莎草制作，而是用玉米秸或甘蔗渣做成的。但是，不论怎样说，莎草纸画已成为埃及旅游业中一种特色独具的纪念品， 成为人们相识古埃及人民生活、弘扬古埃及文明的一个特别的窗口。 拉加卜博士不只热衷于创造发明，还十分勤奋于总结他的实践教训。他告诉我，莎草纸试制成功后两年的1968年，他利用尼罗河上一艘私人划子创建莎草纸研究所。他一边生产莎草纸，一边总结经验，以便不时改良这种纸的品质。现在，他就莎草的种植、莎草纸的制造、莎草纸画的制作以及莎草纸的历史兴衰已写出三十多篇学术论文和两部专著，成为当今世界上数一数二的莎草纸专家。他创建的沙草纸制造新工艺，于1977年取得埃及国家专利。1979年，他荣获法国格勒诺布尔国家科技学院应用生物学博士学位。同年，他又荣获埃及总统专为国家文职人员颁发的最高奖 � 共和国勋章。次年，他又荣获埃及国家美术学院颁发的一级勋章。
谈到他的成功和光彩，拉加卜博士无论是在他的著述中还是在同网站的发言中，老是满怀蜜意地提到中国。他说，1956年出使中国事他人生之旅的一个庞大迁移转变点。作为埃及首任驻华全权代表，他是创建埃中友爱合作关系的介入者，是两国国民传统友情新发展的见证人。还，他频频强调，他是中国古老文明的企慕者。正是这一古老文明，点燃了他的想象力与发明力的火花，使他参军人 � 故国的捍卫者，酿成了文人 � 祖国古老文明的弘扬者。
的确，拉加卜博士对中国人民怀有诚挚而深沉的情感。在他的办公室，在他的莎草纸研究所，在他为进一步弘扬埃及文明而兴建的展现古埃及人民生涯环境的“法老村”，都在惹人注目标地方摆放着他昔时同周恩来总理攀谈的巨幅照片。每当中国新任驻埃及大使到任，他都约请他们参观他的莎草纸研究所和“法老村”。每当中国客人参观他的研究所，他都以宝贵的、亲笔签名的沙草纸画相赠。我这次参观和采访，岂但得到他的亲笔签名赠画，还得到他亲笔署名捐赠的一本关于莎草纸再造的博士论文集和一本装帧精巧的莎草纸画集。在画集的内页上，年逾八十高龄的拉加卜博士发抖着双手，分手用阿拉伯文和中文一笔一划地书写上他和我的名字。看着他那认真的神态、工致的笔迹，我感觉，这决不是一个简略的签名，而是埃及人民对中国人民友好情义的天然表露。
我牢牢握住拉加卜博士的双手。他笑了，我也笑了，笑得都很高兴。

玄月的开罗，秋高气爽，阳光璀璨。我同多少位同伙来到位于尼罗河边的莎草纸研讨所参观。公关蜜斯殷勤地将我们引领到会客室说：“请稍候，拉加卜博士立时就到。”我晓得，这个研究所是拉加卜博士创立的。但我们来参观之前并未预定，何故将他轰动呢？公关小姐注释说，拉加卜博士有一条不成文的划定：凡中国人前来，部属必需告诉他；只有有空暇，他肯定亲身露面欢迎。正说着，只见一位身段薄弱、庞眉皓发的老翁走出去。不必先容，显然他便是拉加卜博士了。一双热情的手伸过来，几句有点生涩的汉语应酬起来。虽属首次碰面，岁数反差又很大，但同他谈起话来，竟犹如故友，毫无生疏与隔辈之感。

拉加卜博士说，除国度使命之外，他到中国到差时还有一点个人的想法：埃及和中国都是世界文明古国，应该在文明交流方面也做点工作。因而，到北京之后，他卖力进修汉语，研读中国文化史。他考查中国古文化设备的维护事情，入迷于中国古文物中多量断简残篇的修复工艺。由此，他联想到埃及从古代墓葬中出土的大量残缺不整的莎草纸文献。只可惜莎草纸失传，这些文献无奈修复。“莎草纸是否再造呢？”就是在这时，一个思想火花在他思想中闪现。后来，一个纯属偶尔的时机，则使他下决心把这刚刚萌发的设法主意付诸实际。那是有一次走出北京到外省去参观。在一个冷僻的农村，他看到农夫用手工体式格局在造纸，原料是毛竹。他细心察看、扣问了造纸的全进程。回到北京之后，他查经历史资料，发现这种造纸的方法同公元二世纪初东汉蔡伦发明的造纸术有惊人的类似之处。时间过去一千八百多年，在呆板造纸术的利用相称广泛之后，中国传统的手工造纸术在民间竟同时被保存下来。那么，莎草纸的传统制造方法在埃及能否也有迹可寻呢？他恰是带着这个问题离开中国，并下定决心，未来非在埃及各地寻访弗成。
莎草纸在中国造纸术发明之前曾是世界上最先辈的文化传播工具。起先，这种纸为法老宫廷书写圣谕和祷词所专用，其制造方法为王宫把持，严禁外传。然而，无论是王命还是宫墙都禁锢不住文化的传播。这种纸后来逐渐传到民间，成为从下战书、签和约到写婚契、开药方、打借条的日常文化用品。这种既轻巧又易保存的纸张很快从埃及传到两河道域、希腊、罗马，庖代了本地风行的羊皮纸、泥板、蜡板和铅板，一时成为最时尚的书写对象。古埃及毕竟有几文献记录在这种纸上，生怕谁也说不请。古希腊和古罗马的文学作品，囊括亚里士多德的一些著作，已发现有两千五百多部都是用这种纸誊写的。用这种纸抄写的种种古代文字资料，现在统称“莎草纸文献”，是研究古代地中海地区的政治、经济、文化、宗教的主要资料。而这种在古代称作“papyrus”的莎草纸，后来演变成英文中的“paper”一字。纸头轻便，影响重大，由此可见一斑。拉加卜创建的仿古法老村
莎草纸约莫失传于公元10世纪。此中一个重要起因是中国造纸术的西传。听说，其时有一批中国工匠漂泊到中亚的撒马尔罕，把造纸术带到那边。从那里，阿拉伯人把这种造纸术传到近东、北非和欧洲。制作便当、经济耐用的中国纸于是抢占了莎草纸的市场，促使这种古埃及纸的分娩走向式微。
拉加卜博士向我吐露，早在北京任职时，他就作为“业余喜好”摸清了莎草纸兴衰的始末。1964年一脱离外接壤，他即正式开端摸索这种纸的再造问题。他说，他当时面对两浩劫题，一是没有造纸的原料，二是不控制这种纸的制造方法。望文生义，这种纸本来是应用一种属于莎草科的水生植物纸莎草制造的。这种草曾大片发展在尼罗河三角洲地区。后来，因为气象变迁，又没有人工种植，这种草在埃及就逐步绝迹。制造莎草纸而没有纸莎草是不行的。那么，到哪里去寻找这种草呢？拉加卜博士想，既然这种草已往生长在尼罗河三角洲地区，要寻找它就不能离开尼罗河。河下流的三角洲地域找不到，那就到河的中上游地区一试。于是，他不辞辛勤，溯尼罗河而上，直奔苏丹。颠末多次寻找，他终于在苏丹北部的一片池沼地里找到这种高四、五米，茎呈三角状的纸莎草。他发掘出草根，带回开罗，在尼罗河的一条汊道中进行人工莳植。种植成功，有了质料，他又开始寻访造纸的方法。他从城市到墟落跑遍全国，期望像在中国那样，在某个不大引人留意的中央把埋没已久的古代造纸术找到。但他没有成功。他于是仿照在中国屯子看到的那种造纸法子将纸莎草切碎研烂，浸泡在本人家中的澡盆里漂取纸浆。他照样没有成功。
一次次失败没有摇动拉加卜博士的决计，反而磨砺了他的意志。“我一定办出别人办不到的事。”他这样一边自励，一边转向包罗古代文献。古埃及人原先是喜好把所有大事都用莎草纸记载在案的，但拉加卜博士翻遍海内一切文献，却找不到对于莎草纸制造方法的任何笔墨或丹青记录。他找来古罗马驰名作家老普林尼成书于公元77年的三十七卷本《博物志》，里边却是提到莎草纸的制造，惋惜语焉不详。他于是又跑到伦敦的大英博物馆、巴黎的卢浮宫。这样，他用了近三年时候，简直败尽家业，终于网络到一些材料。经过研究、剖析、综合、试验，他总结出一套莎草纸再造的工艺，制造出一种光彩淡黄、纹络清楚、疏密有致、酷似中国旧时粗夏布那样的纸张。把这种纸张同埃及古墓中出土的莎草纸一比，他惊喜地发现，两者几乎千篇一律。他终于成功了，时为1966年。
拉加卜博士这段“法老纸”再造的故事固然并不太迂回，但却颇回味无穷。人们稍加思考就不难发明，汗青总爱给人开顽笑：中国造纸术的发明与流传，促使莎草纸失去市场，末了使其制造术失传。事隔一千多年，中国古老造纸术的保留与启示，又促使久已失传的莎草纸得以再造和新生。这是一个何等奇异而有趣的历史的怪圈。在这个怪圈中，历史让中国的蔡伦在公元二世纪之初在人类发现史上饰演了一个光辉的脚色；一千八百多年之后，历史又让埃及的拉加卜在人类发扬自己的古老文化的历史上据有了辉煌的一席之地。
拉加卜博士对我这番谈论彷佛并不感兴味。他抚摩着渐见希罕的满头银丝，付之一笑。他急于要告诉我的还有：莎草纸再形成功之后，一方面用于修复、誊抄、保存埃及古代文献，另一方面用于发展示代游览事业。他聘任一大批艺术家，将从埃及古墓中挖掘出来的壁画、法老与神祗（氐旁改氏旁）的头像、楔形与象形文字、著名文籍的片段一一描述到这种纸上。拙朴的淡黄色纸张，配以格调别致的图画，显得古色古香，给人以显明而惨重的历史感。这种画一上市，立即就成为列国旅客争购的留念品。如今，拉加卜博士发明的这种法老纸画，年贩卖额已达一亿四千多万美圆。
他这一成功引发了埃及全国各地几百家莎草纸制作作坊和莎草纸画室的鼓起。拉加卜博士告诉我，到今朝为止，从事莎草纸制作的人员已超越三万；从事莎草纸画制作与销售的职员也有三万人。确实，在埃及，我们无论走到哪里，随处都可见到有莎草纸画抛售。不过，拉加卜博士指出，现在市场上发售的莎草纸画，很多是假货。那些又黄又硬的画纸，并非用莎草制作，而是用玉米秸或甘蔗渣做成的。但是，不论怎样说，莎草纸画已成为埃及旅游业中一种特色独具的纪念品， 成为人们相识古埃及人民生活、弘扬古埃及文明的一个特别的窗口。 拉加卜博士不只热衷于创造发明，还十分勤奋于总结他的实践教训。他告诉我，莎草纸试制成功后两年的1968年，他利用尼罗河上一艘私人划子创建莎草纸研究所。他一边生产莎草纸，一边总结经验，以便不时改良这种纸的品质。现在，他就莎草的种植、莎草纸的制造、莎草纸画的制作以及莎草纸的历史兴衰已写出三十多篇学术论文和两部专著，成为当今世界上数一数二的莎草纸专家。他创建的沙草纸制造新工艺，于1977年取得埃及国家专利。1979年，他荣获法国格勒诺布尔国家科技学院应用生物学博士学位。同年，他又荣获埃及总统专为国家文职人员颁发的最高奖 � 共和国勋章。次年，他又荣获埃及国家美术学院颁发的一级勋章。
谈到他的成功和光彩，拉加卜博士无论是在他的著述中还是在同网站的发言中，老是满怀蜜意地提到中国。他说，1956年出使中国事他人生之旅的一个庞大迁移转变点。作为埃及首任驻华全权代表，他是创建埃中友爱合作关系的介入者，是两国国民传统友情新发展的见证人。还，他频频强调，他是中国古老文明的企慕者。正是这一古老文明，点燃了他的想象力与发明力的火花，使他参军人 � 故国的捍卫者，酿成了文人 � 祖国古老文明的弘扬者。
的确，拉加卜博士对中国人民怀有诚挚而深沉的情感。在他的办公室，在他的莎草纸研究所，在他为进一步弘扬埃及文明而兴建的展现古埃及人民生涯环境的“法老村”，都在惹人注目标地方摆放着他昔时同周恩来总理攀谈的巨幅照片。每当中国新任驻埃及大使到任，他都约请他们参观他的莎草纸研究所和“法老村”。每当中国客人参观他的研究所，他都以宝贵的、亲笔签名的沙草纸画相赠。我这次参观和采访，岂但得到他的亲笔签名赠画，还得到他亲笔署名捐赠的一本关于莎草纸再造的博士论文集和一本装帧精巧的莎草纸画集。在画集的内页上，年逾八十高龄的拉加卜博士发抖着双手，分手用阿拉伯文和中文一笔一划地书写上他和我的名字。看着他那认真的神态、工致的笔迹，我感觉，这决不是一个简略的签名，而是埃及人民对中国人民友好情义的天然表露。
我牢牢握住拉加卜博士的双手。他笑了，我也笑了，笑得都很高兴。

You might be wondering why. On race morning, usually at about 10am, the whole team of presenters, including David Coulthard and Eddie Jordan, get together, have a meeting and watch all the VTs (pre-produced films) in the show. However, the drive-a-thon was such a big job that the producers and editors hadn't finished putting it together by then.
I'd usually get to watch it on the little screen that Roger the monitor man faithfully carries around the pit lane. But we began the show walking live through McLaren with Martin and, as the garage is a tight squeeze at the best of times, the monitor was waiting at the far side of the garage.
While it was being transmitted on live TV we could hear the elements that had been chosen through our earpieces. We were cringing at the singing. Hope your eardrums survived!
To give you some idea of the effort the guys in the edit suite went to last weekend, this is what they filmed and edited since we arrived in Spa just for the race show: the driving piece, the Rubens Barrichello 300 GP's interview , the Jenson pre-race interview , the story of qualifying, Mark Webber's pole lap, and what we call the 'closer'.
That list doesn't even take into account the stuff we did on Saturday. There was even more 'VT' in that show and if you missed it, the build-up to qualifying can be watched on the iPlayer until next Saturday.
It's the closer that really blows my mind. During the race the guys are watching loads of different feeds from the FOM director who controls the race, also nike shox tl looking for other shots that tell a story, picking a good music track. And most impressively of all they get it all cut together for the end of the show - it makes standing next to EJ and DC seem a doddle!
Perhaps on Sunday the 'closer' mission wasn't as hard as usual because they had stacks of incredible shots to play with. One of the things we'll all benefit from massively when F1 joins the high-definition revolution is how dramatic the on-track action will look.
